Justin Nelson: Pioneering Pathways for Tufts Students at JP Morgan

In the high-stakes world of finance, few have made as significant an impact as Justin Nelson at JP
Morgan. A Tufts University alumnus, Justin Nelson graduated in 1998 with a degree in chemistry and
economics. His journey into the finance sector commenced with a summer
internship as a web developer at JP Morgan, a role secured through personal
connections in an era when formal recruitment channels were scarce.

Nelson’s early days at JP Morgan were marked by determination and a keen understanding of the
industry. He progressed from his initial role to become a managing director in
asset management, based in Greenwich, Connecticut. His career trajectory
highlights not just individual success but also a commitment to paving the way for future generations.

In 2006, recognizing the gap in opportunities for Tufts students seeking careers in
finance, Nelson initiated efforts to designate Tufts as one of JP Morgan’s core
schools. This status would mean active recruitment and the establishment of a
pipeline for internships and entry-level positions. Initially, Nelson’s
endeavor was a solo mission, involving personal expenses and time. Despite
these challenges, he remained undeterred.

By 2009, Justin Nelson’s perseverance paid off; Tufts officially became a core school for JP
Morgan’s asset management group. Since then, over 20 Tufts graduates have
either interned or joined JP Morgan as full-time employees. Justin Nelson has
not only opened doors but also built a robust network of alumni within the
firm, further bolstering recruitment efforts.

Jon Trott, a 2010 economics graduate, is one such beneficiary of Nelson’s initiatives. Hired
during the tumultuous period following the financial crisis, Trott credits his
career at JP Morgan to Nelson’s support. This narrative of mentorship and
opportunity is central to Nelson’s mission.

Justin Nelson’s contributions extend beyond his professional role. He actively participates in
the Tufts Financial Network, sharing insights and fostering connections between
academia and industry. His work is a testament to the impact one individual can
have in creating sustained opportunities for others. Refer to this article, for related information.
