Michael Lacey; American Mathematician, Scholar, and Mentor

Michael Lacey is an American mathematician who attained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Mr. Lacey who was born in 1959 pursued his academic aspirations from a young age. He received the Ph.D. under the guidance and direction of Walter Phillip, a respected scholar. Lacey’s thesis was on probability.

Specifically, he researched the Banach Spaces and solved various problems in relation with the iterated logarithms and the characteristic functions. In the years that followed, his research made significant contributions on probability, harmonic analysis and the ergodic theory.

Lacey taught Mathematics in various universities for the last three decades. This includes the time he worked as an American professor and the different short-term teaching positions he held overseas. Michael Lacey held postdoctoral positions while working at the Louisiana State University. He also served in similar capacities during his tenure at the University of North Carolina. Some of his notable accomplishments while working in these universities include providing proof and surety of the central limit theorem. His students describe him as an exciting and engaging professor. His motivation and encouragement assisted in increasing students in the STEM majors.

Lacey also worked at the Indiana University since 1989. Here, the doctor received a postdoctoral fellowship. He also began further research on bilinear Hilbert transform. At the time, the subject was in the conjecture of different scholars. Solving the problem in 1996 awarded him the Salem Prize.

He has been a Mathematics professor since then, and his excellent skills enabled him to receive the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004. He was appointed one of the fellows of the American Mathematical society in2012. Other notable awards he has received include the Simons Foundations.</li>

Aside from his success in research, Michael Lacey has undertaken various leadership tasks. This includes directing training grants that support multiple students.

Michael Lacey has also offered advisory services and consultation for undergraduate students that became leaders in their respective graduate programs. Due to his input, students succeeded in both academic and industrial jobs. Also, the doctor has mentored at least ten postgraduate students.

How Dick and Betsy DeVos Helped to Rebuild Michigan

One of the most notable early achievements of Dick DeVos was his ability to revitalize the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. He would have to work hard in order to obtain contract contracts with Southwest in order to convince them to offer flights through this airport. However, the work Devos did would go on to completely revitalize the Gerald R. Ford Airport. This wasn’t the only type of revitalization that Dick DeVos would set out to create for the state of Michigan.

During the early 90s, Dick DeVos was worried about a new convention center being built in the town of Grand Rapids, Michigan. This worry came from DeVos being afraid that the business and consumer popularity of downtown Grand Rapids would decrease if another convention center was built in this town. DeVos would go on to help create a plan to help ensure that downtown Grand Rapids would thrive. Creating a group of local business leaders known as Grand Action, DeVos would begin this plan. With help from other community leaders, construction would begin on a series of new projects. A few notable results of this project would become the DeVos Place Convention Center, the DeVos Performance Hall, and the Grand Rapids City Market. Needless to say, Dick DeVos has done a lot to help the state of Michigan.

A lot of credit for the improvements seen around Michigan should also go to Betsy DeVos, Dick’s wife of over 30 years. Throughout her life, Betsy DeVos has helped to push for the expansion of charter schools throughout Michigan. While certain heirs to family fortunes might use this money for themselves, Dick and Betsy DeVos remain committed to giving to others. Dick DeVos received much of his wealth from being heir to the Amway company fortune. This husband and wife would even go on to create the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. This foundation has reportedly given away a total of $138.7 million to help fund programs and initiatives centered around both education reform and scholarship opportunities for private schools. In 2006, this foundation would become the leading donor in regards to the construction of a $103 million local children’s hospital.

That being said, not all of the ideas pitched by this husband and wife have been met with open arms. For instance, the Devos foundation sponsored an amendment during the year 2000 that would create vouchers funded by taxes in order to encourage families to enroll their children in private schools. While the success for charter schools has been met with mixed results in Michigan, this husband and wife team continue to push for parents to have a choice in where their children receive an education. One person that was both listening and agreeing with the policies set forth by Betsy DeVos has been President Donald Trump. President Trump would name Betsy DeVos as the 11th United States Secretary of Education.
